Grimény - Die Große Aufgabe

A few years back, i was at a show for a band that tackled music like Grimény does. The friend that invited me answered my question of who comes out to see bands like this. He responded, "metal heads and music scholars". This statement sunk in my thoughts and has resurfaced while listening to Die Große Aufgabe. If you are wondering what the band was that sparked these ramblings, the answer is the Aristocrats. There are definitely some similarities between Grimény and the for mentioned other band. Both leaving rock behind to pursue new venues only technical prowess can access. Like a star cruiser exploring far from home, these sounds are beyond the simple classifications earth dwellers have churned up. Die Große Aufgabe is a complex gem cut with a myriad of sparkling facets. Place the headphones on and begin to explore the depth.

One essential aspect of Die Große Aufgabe that needs to be voiced, these sounds have a deep warmth that timing and technique can so often move away from. The heavily dense tones drifting in the currents of despondency are still the driving energy, but their listening accessibility is fueled by thoughtful hearts. With musicians as skilled as Falk Meutzner, Nico Vetter and Torsten Lang, the tendency to speed out of a concentric orbit is always present. Singular feverish technical abilities coupled together with fellow band members possessing equal prowess, have bearings to play into a singularity no one will be able to follow... Maybe metal heads and music scholars, but for the rest... Grimény avoids this pitfall making music on the edge of maelstrom. This composition is seriously precise and filled with heavy patterns eliciting a magnitude of energy equivalent to massive geologic pressure. Somehow Die Große Aufgabe stays affable, digestible and delightfully spectacular. Musicians playing like whizzing electrons, the introduction of a slight molecular change can cause the atom to explode. But this does not happen, Grimény is in complete control and allows their complicated rhythms to be heard by a wider audience of music lovers. Each listen pushing band and audience closer together. The true appreciation rests with a few listens and developing a familiarity. Then the spirit of Die Große Aufgabe can be part of our reality.

Released on Already Dead Tapes and Records on cassette and in a very limited edition of seventy five. Grimény is from Germany and physical copies shipped in Europe are probably more cost effectively ordered from their bandcamp page. This is the second release by Grimény, the first was in 2016 titled Die große Enttäuschun. The debut release was also part of the Already Dead catalog on cassette and vinyl versions from the German label Distilled & Bottled. This format holds the same for the newest release.
