Jackson VanHorn - A Silent Understanding

Reflective thought of the world around us. Jackson VanHorn pulls from emotions and the process of trying to understand. His ruminations turned to poetic verse on a canvas of introspective rhythms and beats. A reach back into the eighties, where music was in a slow explosion of both melody and depth. A Silent Understanding harnesses the energies of serious contemplation and focuses on saturating sounds for conscious exploration.

This is the second full length for Jackson VanHorn, following the debut After the Rehearsal and ep hvn. The fourth track title on this release, "Melancholia" is an excellent description of how the entire album feels. There is a perception transmitted from music from forty years ago and A Silent Understanding seems to mirror this in the best sense. Rhythms finding emotions held in deep hiding places while words coax inner feelings to the forefront. The title "A Silent Understanding" is divided between two tracks, both tracks excluding vocals. Both of these selections are the most deviated from the past, pushing the feel for the album into the distant future. This will be a little stretch and always trying not to throw subjective comparisons out there, but Jackson VanHorn seems to be a perfect blend of Morphine and Loyd Cole and the Commotions. Jackson VanHorn soothes the inner workings while exploring the thresholds of musical boundaries.

Cassettes released on Already Dead Tapes and Records in an edition of one hundred. Tapes are available on there own or in the January 2022 Release Bundle with IMAGINARY by Muave. I like how  Already Dead Tapes and Records is making the catalog more concise for 2022. Both of the January releases are excellent starts for the year.
