Günter Schlienz - Mikrofonie

Step back and allow more to gather in. This is how Günter Schlienz approached his newest release Mikrofonie. These two selections go beyond just collecting more field/environmental sounds. Mikrofonie seems like the entire canvas has been augmented for Günter Schlienz. With a such a large discography, there are definitely many compositions crossing sonic thresholds, but Mikrofonie travels on a different path. The first lengthy piece "wolkersdorf" has so much diversity. From birds to crickets, concert hall, spoken word, applause and the binding synthesizer notes from Günter Schlienz, this feels like an entire album on its own. The real sweetness is the fluidity through a fascinating array of sounds. There is a fine balance between created melodies and the various recorded sounds filtering in. The second equally long selection titled "plankton" begins with guitar and chimes. This track was recorded a year before "wolkersdorf" and has contributions from Marko Martini for guitar, e-bow, bouzouki and harp, Roland Wendling for limpeon and harp, Holger Adam for finger cymbals, Floyd for harp, Katarina for voice. Very much a different approach, with the strings adding a soft folk essence throughout. Field recordings and synthesizer are still a large facet of this track, gathering more momentum in the second half. The last three minutes are reminiscent of a Residents influence for me. A deep bass line with mole like vocals, love it!

Released on Günter Schlienz's Cosmic Winnetou in a limited hand numbered edition of fifty. Mikrofonie is one third of the XXIII batch. The other two releases in the batch are sold out, but Mikrofonie is still available from the Cosmic Winnetou bandcamp page.
