Nicholas Langley - Plays The Vitamin B12
Exceptional music can happen instantaneously or take a circuitousness journey. For this new release on Strategic Tape Reserve, the long path is complete. A new composition by Nicholas Langley, one of the musicians who plays with the improvisational group The Vitamin B12. This group has had different members over it's long history including Nicholas, but the artist Alasdair Willis has always been the denominator. The first connection is easy, Nicholas Langley has played in the same group with Alasdair Willis. In the years centered around 2010, Alasdair Willis composed a thirty track solo work titled "Rock Formations". Not sure if this was ever physically released, but "Rock Formations" is available to listen and download on The Vitamin B12 bandcamp page.
The second connection is Nicholas Langley's new arrangements of selected tracks on Alasdair Willis' "Rock Formations". With so much music available to digitally listen to, comparing Alasdair's originals to Nicholas' reworked versions is an easy process. The biggest difference is how Nicholas has deepened the groove. Alasdair's raw and beautiful originals have been injected with harmonic love. Bass rhythms by Nicholas adding a new pulse, melodies with a flare in a different dimension. Another group of tracks on "Plays The Vitamin B12" are culled from the The Vitamin B12's early "Hot Heap" and a little from their "Keio Rhythms" compositions. These are more in the vein of surf rock, experimental and some darker chiptune. These selections adding diversity to the longer slow building "Rock Formations" tracks.
The last interrelation is Strategic Tape Reserves work and effort with Nicholas Langley to lay the stones on the final path for physical release. These are very limited edition C44 cassettes in a run of thirty. All physical editions are sold out from the label, but the digital version is available for listening and purchase.
