Günter Schlienz - The Icelandic Tapes

The hum of motors, low, deep, determined to ferry those who control them. A radar sounding with a single note as the line crosses the blip. The location pinpointed for future connection, a removed  place of new solitude, mystic beauty.

Waves breaking gently where the land holds back the sea. Here peacefulness is facilitated by natural tranquility. The fanfare of past lives, past ceremonies, past civilizations, echoing in the consciousness for a brief moment, then new notes emerge. Creativity growing like wild vines, using unique methods in the battle against gravity. This special place holding a value of sentiment mixed with evolved and eroded beauty. Notes becoming passages, all finding ground as The Icelandic Tapes.

Moving water as a medium. The body resonating within the encompassing world. Molecules vibrate at infinite frequencies, stationary to a hasty blur, the resulting notes rise and fall. Somehow this process sounds old. Like a vintage movie image of a flying saucer, lifting off and hovering above. The pilot navigating with the touch of a drumstick on a thin metal surface. Subtle percussive taps sustaining motion in a completely unknown way. A nearby radio dial is turned, casual speech is collected and pondered upon. Electronics begin to hum and buzz, these sounds resembling melodies trickling through supportive conduit.

Daydream thoughts are pushed aside as wind and water announce their physical presence once again. Combining to create a white noise, like an old empty weathered canvass. A place where the grandeur of an massive cathedral organ can paint sonic strokes, while the chorus says adieu. The final chapter combining a melodic sequence with life sounds. The ambient veil lifting or falling, all depending on what side your thoughts reside in.

These are some thoughts on a beautifully complex Günter Schlienz composition. Released on the label Hangover Central Station from Hamburg, Germany. Cassettes housed in a black box, in a very limited edition of sixty. There are about ten left from the label, their releases as limited and diverse as the sounds on Günter's addition.
