Q///Q - cooper do-nuts and the city of night

Have we all said thank you to Peter Kris and Norm Heston? Thank you for the second in a row, historical mind opening lesson with music as a medium. Following last years Vanguard Youth composition is Cooper Do-Nuts and the City of Night. Both the history of Cooper Do-Nuts and John Rechy's novel City of Night were unknown to me. But listening to Q///Q while reading history have become a new found significance. Q///Q newest composition touches on the turmoil the Los Angles LGBT community endured during the 50's and 60's.

Q///Q takes vintage rhythms and beats from our sonic industrial past and rewrites them with a creative new beauty. This mirrors well with the topics Q///Q chooses to center around. Like the hash industrial clamor of the early eighties pushing the threshold of most everyone, the LGBT community faced the obtuse thought of the people around them. But unlike industrial music where people could choose to not listen, individual's paths of love and life were impeded and tortured by the compassionately vacant majority surrounding them. Ironically much of this obtuse thought stemmed from religions that espouse compassion as a core value in their dogma. Unfortunately only selective benevolence for the world they deem as "right". Further, if everything took place in someones ideal construct, there would be no need for understanding and sensitivity, these feelings would never need to manifest.... Writing about how people think is far from describing the music of Q///Q and their composition Cooper Do-Nuts and the City of Night, but thank you Peter and Heston for bringing me again to the continually learning process of understanding. The sounds within are melodic and dreamy. A haze of thoughts vocalized to fissures forming from electronic energy. The track titles allude to the climate in this history, "how it came to be", "broader context", and "story silenced" are a few examples. The lyrics are in Spanish and also convey the turmoil of this period in history. Weighty, rhythmic, trance inducing beauty again from Q///Q.
