Rowan Coupland & Eirini Fountedaki / Ceri Rhys Matthews - Betwixt & Between 9

The new Betwixt & Between split cassette, number nine in the series, has surpassed my descriptive abilities. Music and song pushing past our simple genre classifications and at the same time stemming from the roots of all sound we know. This is the complexity of all three artists, Rowan Coupland & Eirini Fountedaki on the first side and Ceri Rhys Matthews on the second, building melody from total love and study to create new paths in gorgeous sonic gardens. For the novice listener, simple chamber folk music might be the best comparison, but for someone who has listened to a fair share of folk music, Betwixt & Between 9 is an apparition of past, present and future sounds crafted for serene delight.

Rowan Coupland & Eirini Fountedaki having been working on music together since 2018. Their set together features Rowans singing and song writing while playing both harp and guitar. Eirini adds the most subtle and sweetly complex violin to the recordings. Together, their five selections on the first side are some of the most stunningly written and performed tracks heard in a very long time. Ceri Rhys Matthews balances the flip of this tape with the wooden concert flute. Four selections of timeless melodies from century's passage. As a person so influential and creative to all those around him, these four tracks are very special. A brief moment highlighting skill and creativity with one of the most ancient musical instruments.

This is a release from Betwixt & Between and is currently available from the label's bandcamp page. Limited to one hundred cassettes in the run. All eight compositions in the split series by Betwixt & Between have sold out. Number nine will definitely be short lived for physical availability.

The description and history of the artists is extremely well written by Jacken Elswyth on the Betwixt & Between release page.
