Wanted to start of this description with straight facts, this is important because any opportunity to see Imal Gnawa should be acted upon.
There was a time for me of a big push into Gnawa music. It's awesome, there is so much to love about it. Raw guitar and incredible rhythm, beautiful singing and the droning deep canvas... Easily a favorite in style of music. There is a good amount that did not do it for me though. Maybe too forced or contrived to be Gnawa music. Probably great musicians, but this does not always equate to music making my sadly over eccentric tastes. Totally the listener at fault here. Imal Gnawa resonates with much love for me. Every track on Twilight Prophecy is the essence of not just Gnawa music but harmony, melody and beauty. If there is someone that has never heard the sounds of Gnawa, Twilight Prophecy would be the perfect tape to give them. The balance of the vocals and the rhythm are beautifully fluid. The addition of the droning and swirling synthesizer is also crucial in making Twilight Prophecy such a mesmerizing listen. The feeling of this composition is expertly played traditional sounds that have been ever so slightly pushed into the hypnotizing haze of melodic tranquility. Everything is perfect on this album.
