Two Steppes - Bowl of Flowers
Wish the descriptive writing could arrive before cassettes sold out... At least there is the ability to listen and purchase the digital version and the knowledge the sounds within are enjoyed by a large audience. Bowl of Flowers is the newest release for the Brooklyn, New York label Solid Melts. The label has been a little quiet since the 2021 release by Bad Trips titled From Beyond. The project composing Bowl of Flowers is Two Steppes. Produced and mixed by Drew M Gibson. Mastering by Andrew Nerviano. Various guests on different tracks from Oscar Allen Guinn IV, Jianna Bennetti, Wav Waster, Whit Fragassi, Andrya Ambro and Frank Rathbone. The complete list of how and where all of the artists helped in making Bowl of Flowers is included on the bandcamp page.
After listening for a repeated listening session, it is very easy to tell why this release sold out so quickly. Bowl of Flowers is upbeat, very melodic and crazy super chill. Many of the ten selections on this album have an desirable nostalgic appeal. Like the project name and also the title of the third track, "Two Steppes" could easily be from the late eighties or early nineties. These tracks are fluid and flow from the past and into the future. Vocals have a hypnotic dreamlike tranquility to them while instrumentation fluctuates on an edgy pop precipice. There is a special appeal to the almost eight minute run of the two back to back tracks "Rolento" and "Party at the Pumpkin Pond, Parts I-III". So much diversity in this segment, a great showcase of the sonic bandwith for Two Steppes.
Very excited to hear Solid Melts is tuned back in for excellent compositions. Drew said they are excited to have a few more releases lined up. If you missed grabbing a copy of Bowl of Flowers, there will be some opportunities for cool sounds in the near future.
