Eva-Maria Houben, Harmjan Roeles - given
A blur of sonic energies. Far to the horizon a ship rolls on the slowest moving waves. The vast distance allows only silence from the shoreline vantage point. Unhurriedly the separation is diminished, and with each unperceived increment the lumbering boat of wood and metal announces it's prescience. The rocking bellowing cries in one direction and countering with another as the tilt reverses. In the brief equilibrium, a harmony resonates with all forms of natural vibration.
Eva-Maria Houben plays organ and Harmjan Roeles plays double bass. Roeland van Niele is the third member of the trio as producer, engineer and masters the recording. These three artist have shared a composition titled given. Three selections clocking in close to an hour in length. The track titles are basically one, two and three, the sonic haunts within seem to be continuation of the whole. And haunts could be a fairly descriptive word, given is desolate with weathered aural angles. There are moments of effervescence, in the middle part of the second selection Eva-Maria Houben plays with sounds of a calliope and Harmjan Roeles close to approaches a traditional bass line. This moment is fleeting as both musicians move deeper into the nexus of crepuscular aural mysteries. The last selection is filled with sonic minimalism. Long drones, sustained tones, creating a palate of residual vibrations. Excellent from start to finish.
Released on the Austin, Texas label Sawyer editions. A compact disc edition available on it's own or with the #9 bundle. Beautiful everything. This is a wonderful listen.
