Walker Yancey has full attention on this gorgeous album titled I'm A Teenage Rice Field. The effortless flow between low-fi melodic ear diggers and gooey analog ambience has a full grin in this conscious receptor. The presentation of the record, all white, with out many indicators on side A or B, leaves only the drop of blood, as seen in the pictures, to quickly discern the A side. And with this sequence, I'm A Teenage Rice Field starts off with a preconditioning of thematic energy. This is quickly followed by a slow jangle from "Moon Pie". The heartbeat of rhythm, guitar and dream filled lyrical harmony sinks like peanuts in a coke bottle. This brings listeners to the longest selection on the album, "Wood Lit From Town Heights". Walker Yancey combining a droning background with a slow beat, samples and drifting electronics. This is also a cornerstone for the composition, illustrating depth and patience to all of the song writing. A pace maker to some extent, allowing selections with vocals more showcasing and time to absorb. The last track on side A is titled "Ur Dice", a beautiful melody recorded with guitar and vocals. This selection ties in nicely with the first track from side B, simply titled "Bl". Guitar melodies with what almost sounds like samples from Big Audio Dynamite, but that's just my interpretation. A brief ambient fire leads to the final selection "Diver2". Again, Walker Yancey combines the strength of differences within the composition into one selection. A splendid way to move forward with the only sad realization of how too short I'm A Teenage Rice Field is. And what also makes the album so special.
Released on the Alabama label Sweet Wreath in a very limited edition of one hundred. This is a special label having many great artists involved. Seems like a close knit family of artists working together with a love for sound and art. Everything the Sweet Wreath releases has a distinctive unpolished allure of great sonic extent.
