Wrest - Yaw

Three musicians playing saxophone, base and percussion.... There is nothing here for music lovers of melody and tradition. Very much the opposite, Jack Wright, Evan Lipson and Ben Bennett travel to the sonic edge. Like the star ship Enterprise reaching the "Galactic Barrier", the energy field encountered saturates these three musician's creativity and performance with profound verve. For many, pressing play on Yaw is going to be a challenge, with the aural structure/non-structure saturating the conscious, a profusion of listeners will fall out. For the remaining with altered constructs, resting within the thirty six minutes of this recording are discoveries of both chaos and tranquility. There is a beautiful balance as we are pulled in and pushed away, serenaded and pummeled. These musicians parlay the edge of sound, amazingly with mostly traditional instruments. Making this recording even more dynamic is how crystal clear the instruments are. Even with all going full tilt, the definitive properties of each are mesmerizing. Jack, Evan and Ben, perform so seamlessly together... they have a groove well beyond the conceptualization of most conventional listeners.

After listening to Yaw on many occasions and becoming more comfortable with this anomalous sonic warmth ... Thoughts surfaced on how three consciousnesses can connect at an unfathomable level of individual talent and creativity, composing a very fluidly cohesive slab of sound. Future paths for all of us can hold Yaw as a stepping platform, reaching our unknown potential.
