Jacken Elswyth / Ryan Eyers - Betwixt & Between 6

Jacken Elswyth brings us the sixth installment from Betwixt & Between Tapes with the now standard split between two artists. Actually number six has three artists, Jacken Elswyth on the first side and Ryan Eyers on the flip, Mark Stevenson sings while drone plays on the haunting song titled "The Caravan" making three contributions to this recording.

Beautiful renditions and beguiling sublime improvisations or beguiling sublime renditions and beautiful improvisations, the arrangement of these adjectives works for everything Jacken does. Betwixt & Between 6 opens with "Lone Prairie" and then falls into the magical drone of "The Caravan". The first piece embodying vibrancy and technique from a century of banjo playing, but  Jacken still adding unique grandeur. Near the end, the strings quietly conclude leaving the drone of a hurdy-gurdy that transitions into Mark Stevenson's "The Caravan". This majestically sung song tells the story of reaching one with the energy of the world, and within that moment a charge of enlightenment rushing through. The last two selections from Jacken showcase improvisations on amplified banjo and acoustic. With so much good music on Betwixt & Between 6, Jacken's extemporizing is still an absolute favorite.

When the tape flipped and Ryan Eyers sounds hit the speakers, there was a moment of checking to see if this was still the same tape. Ryan offers five tracks all roughly three minutes, done on a drum kit, simply titled "Sketch 1 through 5". Throughout theses selections Ryan's maintains a tranquilizing cadence. Percussive sounds falling into a groove, riding in the trough, then skimming on the crest. A combination of methodical patience alternating with an energetic barrage. Ryan Eyers sounds are well balanced with the first side of this cassette. Both showing the timeless love for origins of musical instruments and the creative future they will always have.

Betwixt & Between 6 is in an edition of seventy with copies currently available from their London base. Here is another version of "The Caravan" by Mark Stevenson, with additional songs he wrote played with Heed the Thunder. Ryan Eyers works on the Berlin based Nok Nok Radio show, worth checking out here. Betwixt & Between Tapes is a project of Jacken Elswyth, please support the love and effort to showcase this world of the most real music. Thank you.
