Eden Lonsdale / red panel - ricercari for rainy days
After taking a little bit of time to read and work through understanding who the "red panel" are, the artists in the title makes a little more sense. The "red panel" is a collective of composers, and sound artists based in northern Europe. The project was founded by Cara Dawson and Eden Lonsdale in 2018. Both Cara and Eden play on all three selections on this album, but all music is composed by Eden Lonsdale. Thus the artist title as Eden Lonsdale / red panel, which Eden is already a part of the red panel. This seems like a lot of work to get to here, but there is value in understanding the essence of how this collective flows together. Especially since these sounds are full of emotion and serene heaviness. A good thing in realizing Eden has established this particular sonic path of creativity. Especially for future works where Cara or another artist might be the composer and the sounds have a different feel.
This composition titled ricercari for rainy days consist of three lengthy selections. The first, "falling asleep on an airplane" is strangely the most complex. With Cara Dawson playing the lever harp, Patrick Hegarty as percussion and Eden Lonsdale both cello and electronics, the temperament is vexing. Sounds pull thoughts in infinite directions. Moments of ethereal loftiness swung on a pendulum to burn through the planets core. Both air and density sharing simultaneous presence, the experience is on the fringe of comprehension. The title track "ricercari for rainy days" adds Forrest Moody with harmonium. The aural landscape is quickly painted with a thick brush stroke of ominous measure. With all four artists climbing sonic mountains together, then individual pealing off into the emptiness below. The final and longest selection titled "cycles/emptiness" sounds with the absence of percussion from Patrick Hegarty. "cycles/emptiness" is the most subdued piece on the composition. Sound and notes seem to be in a glacial state of progression. A massive force of artistic potential invoking a mysterious and captivating telluric tranquility. A thought fueling hi-grade test for deep reflection and outward perception for the conscious.
Released by the Texas label Sawyer Editions on beautiful compact disc editions. Over seventy five minutes of sounds from a highly talented collective under the project name red panel. These are the compositions of Eden Lonsdale. They are uniquely enticing in an aural landscape filled with detailed crags and endless vistas. Not sure how many physical copies are in this edition, but there are only a handful remaining at this time.
