Matt Robidoux - Background Corn
Saturday mornings used to be the time for countless cartoons. A space free from school and responsibilities. This was a time for the imagination to hyper engage with vivid sights and wild sounds. Connecting these thoughts with a youthfully exuberant Matt Robidoux, detailed nostalgia has been woven with fascinating rhythms. From an in the field documentary recording made when eleven years old and current day wisdom and experience with music composition, Background Corn takes stage. Beats and melodies saturate a narration of a seal watch boat ride where excitement was at the highest tilt. There is a hint Matt has gone on the tour before or at least he studied every detail of the scheduled activities. Also, pretty to cool to have support from Aunt Karen. Had not thought about the title of this composition until writing, now it makes total sense. After many listens, Background Corn is extraordinarily fluid. Listening in entirety is essential with a gorgeous flow of narration and sounds until the very end. This integration of adventure reporting from years ago with an avant-garde soundtrack is beautifully orchestrated and a joy to experience as a listener.
Background Corn was released a few months back as a tour cassette. This was in an edition of thirty with soft sculptured cassette pouches hand embroidered by Cal Fish. Interestingly a Cal Fish release was described on Lost in a Sea of Sound ten years ago, titled WHAT'S JOOD? Unfortunately the hand made cassette housed editions are sold out but very fortunately Background Corn will be released in an edition of one hundred cassettes by Already Dead Tapes in less than a week. Pre-orders are live now. This is a great recording, really have enjoyed every listen!
