teguh permana & yngel - s/t

Traditions mixing with current creativity, the sounds blur through time. Long ago, a single instrument being played was a highlight of ceremony, introspection and relaxation. Laborious work of all types finally concluding for the day. A cherished instrument bequeathed through generations is unfurled for the evenings resonant base. The sounds pushed forth drifting through tired ears, finding billowing smoke, then ascending for gods to hear. For Teguh Permana this instrument is the Tarawangsa. A stringed instrument from west Java, played both with a bow and plucked as well. Taus Bregnhøj-Olesen and Emil Palme use electric guitar creating the cosmic variance. All three musicians continually passing the sonic baton, their sounds both bubble and melt in mysterious delectation.

This composition was recorded in Bandung, Indonesia. The most striking aural feature is the pathway leading to both past and future. Teguh's sounds from the Tarawangsa pull thoughts back to the earliest recordings available to be heard from classic Eastern folk music. His playing method has many moments centered around traditional aspects, but this is only a part of the whole. When the Tarawangsa falls into the droning background, both Taus and Emil (Yngel) travel far past known traditions, taking their creativity and playing methods to places few have gone. Their styles reaching back into the past, then both gently and forcefully pushing the thresholds of beautiful sounds made with electric guitar. With the timeless strength of the Tarawangsa, the first listen to this composition produces an unbalanced account of the rolls of these three musicians. After really sinking in to the arrangements they share together, a new understanding of how counterpoised Emil, Taus and Teguh are. This is an extremely innovative composition, filled with the complexities of tradition and exploration. The feelings teguh permana & yngel impart are equally as complex, a sometimes melancholy resonance that transcends into untamed sonic affair. Many listens are well worth the time.
