Yngel - II

Somewhere in the heart of Penguin Cafe Orchestra or early Dan Delsanto recordings, Yngel can be heard. Symphonic blues, primitive experimental, Yngel darts and dodges all classifiers. The newest album titled II explores stringed arrangements with sentiment, whimsy and wisdom. Twenty tracks in all, with the longest being just over three and a half minutes, II moves quickly and effortlessly. Many influences are touched upon, but there is a strong push towards patterns and melodies explored for the first time. This aspect makes II so easy to digest, blending nostalgic guitar techniques with the totally new.

This is the second time Yngel has been part of Lost in a Sea of Sound. The first composition was when Yngel, who are Emil Palme & Taus Bregnhøj-Olesen recorded with Teguh Permana. This time Emil and Taus are accompanied only by each other. Their album II is a continuation of their debut album in 2015 with track titles up to #22. So the first track on II is #23. Also the first album was on white colored vinyl, making II very consistent with it's predecessor. Together Emil and Taus push forward with electric guitars, using a variety of materials to resonate along the strings, sounds from their instruments become unrecognizable. Melodies dancing in in the next dimension are paired with thoughtfulness of where guitar music has herald from. Sometimes the pull is stronger in one direction, but there is always a well considered balance. For these tracks to be recorded over a longer length of time and in different locations, the congruency between them is pretty amazing. Two artists finding this special space again and again shows a well developed synchronicity. Their innovative techniques could easily lead down the path of noise and chaos, but Yngel continues to make beautiful music.

Yngel's second album is released on the Copenhagen, Denmark label Aftenrutine. The packaging is minimal just like the track titles. Only a plastic sleeve houses this beautiful cream colored vinyl with selections divided by numbers. Not sure what the total number is for pressings, but they are currently available from the label and possible bicycle delivery if you live in Copenhagen.
