Baujillaud - A Vision of a Dragon’s Head

The year 2021 has ticked over, so much good music has filled the mind. A Vision of a Dragon’s Head is an album i have been sitting on. I would like to say, "saving the best for last" or "patiently waiting to see if anyone else picked up on how good this is", but that would be too perfect. The reality is just being busy and slightly intimidated by a composition that included Emil Palme as part of the project. I know any project he works on will be beautifully complicated and push the thresholds of familiarity. Baujillaud is Mads Egetoft, Emil Palme and Anders Vestrergaard. After listening, i now know Baujillaud is a triple threat of skilled and creative artists. Emil's guitar, a triangular component of Mad's vocals, keyboard, saxophone, and Ander's drums. Together these three artist blend music from the past with crisp sounds of where music will go. There is so much on A Vision of a Dragon’s Head, wonderfully sparking thoughts of bands from ages ago while singularly being a heavy weight complete album on it's own. A very difficult task indeed, using sonic hooks to grab the consciousness and throw it forward towards what may come.

A Vision of a Dragon’s Head includes ten tracks in just under forty five minutes. The most descriptive word i could use to describe everything would be "punch". Meaning to strike with a forward thrust. From the opening track "Some People", listeners are treated with the fast moving pureness of guitar, drums and saxophone. Mad's vocals are a call to the show, "this is what we are going to do", join us. If comparisons are in order, think James Chance and the Contortions melted with King Krule. Baujillaud's uniqueness turns like a cog in a safe, clicking in place with "Goes Without a Thing". An amalgamation of Butthole Surfers and Andrian Belew, twisted pop staked to the ground with knurled wire. The last song on the first side "Life" summarizes how incredible A Vision of a Dragon’s Head is. Maybe Thomas Dolby with a touch of David Byrne, but comparisons are only from the aspect of a single listener and their own experiences. Almost half the songs on this album are instrumental, have not even touched on those. Went with the low hanging fruit of the first side. Mads, Emil and Anders are an incredibly tight trio. Their sounds hold solid with hazed psychedelic rock and jazzed out jams of incredible energy. There is one more track that needs a partial tether, when listening to "K2" i cant help thinking about the Budokan Boys - That's How You Become a Clown album. The last selection is the title track "A Vision of a Dragon’s Head". The longest of all and the most tempered towards introspection.

A Vision of a Dragon’s Head is a vinyl release on the Abstract Tits label out of Copenhagen, Denmark. Copies are available through the distributor Rillbar, also in Denmark. This is the second album on Lost in a Sea of Sound from Abstract Tits. The first was tilted Lunden, a project of Emil Palme and Lasse Bækby Buch.
