Ensemble Adapter & Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson - Clavis Metrica

Th composer for this piece is Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson. His inspiration is from ancient Icelandic poetry. On this recording titled Clavis Metrica, traditional rhythms are renounced as aural exploration moves outward. As noted in the liner notes, "clavis metrica" is a term for poetry discovering variable verse, a process for authors to showcase their growing experience with a flexibility over the traditional boundaries. Listening through these eighteen selections, Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson has achieved his initial goal. The artists performing Clavis Metrica are a four person group based in Berlin operating as Ensemble Adapter. They are Kristjana Helgadóttir, flute and rattles; Ingólfur Vilhjálmsson, clarinet in Bb and rattles; Gunnhildur Einarsdóttir, harp and samba flute and Matthias Engler, percussion, harmonica and various whistles.

Clavis Metrica is a dizzying piece. The flutes and clarinet could be a soundtrack to the movements of the American Woodcock (Scolopax minor) with percussion, rattles and whistle highlighting discoveries in daily life. There is a difficulty in writing a description since Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson composition rest outside the thresholds conventional aural confines. What can be said is both writing and musical performance is crystalline. The artist playing with profound patience and clarity through all written pieces.
