Monastics - Plastic Bird
An album of great adventure. Plastic Bird resonates with epic melodies. From acoustic guitar fueled selections to magnificent field recordings sonicaly painted on rhythm and beat. With a slight turn of the dial, theatrical endeavors with a potential to soundtrack many environments clearing for dub based bliss driving the entire listening experience deeper in thought. With many listens to the point of writing, Plastic Bird eludes easy description and rests it's colorful sonic feathers under brown magnetic tape.
The Monastics are the trio of EJ Fry, Don Chase, and Jeremy Hurewitz established in the early 2000's and active in New York. There was mention of the group scattered and off on their own paths. This mentioning is from the bandcamp notes on their El Gran E Records release titled "world island" back in 2022. The cassette in description here, titled "Plastic Bird" on the Fluere Tapes label has note of being recorded in 2024/2025. The Fluere Tapes bandcamp description does not go into depth on the status of the Monastics but by putting the pieces together it sounds like the band got to making music again and shared the beautiful Plastic Bird album with the world. And to that note, there is a worldly vibe running through these selections. The Monastics are the well studied children of Arthur Lyman taking faux-Polynesian sounds beyond imagination. This album is gorgeous and crosses genres as smooth as clouds float through the sky.
Release on Fluere Tapes in an edition of twenty cassettes. This was a late December 2025 release and incredibly there are five remaining. Fluere Tapes released Body United by The Night Pharma yesterday on February sixth. This is also on a limited run of twenty cassettes with five remaining. Now is the time to get both cassettes!
