Towner - Greatest Hits
This is the fourth release from Towner. Lost in a Sea of sound had the pleasure to listen and describe the first EP cassettes from the band back in 2018 on Crush Grove Records. Years later, Towner has released their Greatest Hits. The thought would be this is a collection of all the best songs over a two album and one EP run. The band has had a little fun with the album name. Greatest Hits is full of all new songs, nine to be exact. The tracks in this composition show how diverse the group is. From the opening selection "We Can Talk About It If You Want", the dial turns to a straight up rock ‘n’ roll gem. You can feel the drive of the instruments, a mad paced burn with a little bit heavy lyrics. The second track backs off the throttle just a bit, compartmentalizing the lyrics and music, just a tick more cultivated with the swing to full jam at the end. By the third selection, "Gold Into The Soul", Towner starts to get with more toe tapping and lyrical hooks. This is where the album changes slightly, the space opens up, still guitar, bass and drums, are the driving force but the selections have a faceted complexity. "Sequel" is an interesting departure, feels like an influence from Tones On Tail. Definitely has an early 80s vibe. The band goes roots again in "Private Drive", a heavy rock ‘n’ roll tune with all the sounds driving privately in our ears. "Good Times" is really filled with the most individualized instrumentation. Very easy to hear how good the musicians are after slowing things down a little bit and letting bass, drums and guitar pronounce themselves. The last track picks up the pace and takes us away.
Towner is from Ann Arbor, Michigan. Their music is heated with energy and love, excellent songwriting and solid playing all the way through. I purchased this compact disc with a tee shirt from the bands bandcamp page. Have not got to wear the tee shirt because my daughter has taken possession :) All money the band receives from bandcamp goes directly to NAACP LDF FOREVER. Towner is an awesome group of people and deserve all the respect.
